You or your spouse decides you want a divorce. You go to a “Divorce Lawyer”. You pay a retainer ranging from $1,500.00 to $3,000.00 or more and fill out endless forms. In Erie, Huron, Ottawa, or Lorain County just the filing fees are from $250.00 to $500.00. The first attorney files hateful public documents about your spouse and your marital problems. The second attorney responds with more hateful public documents and the judge or magistrate, who never has even met either of you nor any of your children, issues temporary orders.
Usually the temporary orders are financially devastating to both of you and are in effect for a year or two. After a year or so of threatening letters, motions for contempt of court, and hearings, postponements, numerous delays, and more money for your attorneys, a final hearing is set. If you are lucky, you will meet with your lawyer a week before the final hearing or, in some cases, you won’t meet with your lawyer until the morning of the final hearing.
When you show up at court, you wait in the hall, the two attorneys disappear behind a door, and an hour or two later come out and tell you what the terms of the divorce will be. A ten-minute hearing with the attorneys talking on the record, a few “yes” answers from you and your spouse, and it’s over.
Or at least you think it’s over. It may still take months to get the final papers prepared and filed.
